First woman mayor in Minnesota, she served as mayor of St. Peter from 1921 to 1922. When Mrs. Gault finished her term as mayor, she ran unsuccessfully for Congress on the Prohibition ticket, she was defeated by the Incumbent Republican. Her father E. St. Julien Cox, was the town's first mayor, from 1865 to 1867. Her mother, was a distant cousin of President Grover Cleveland. Her first husband, A. K. Gault, was a distant relative of Vice-President Aaron Burr.
