Kate Adelle Hughes was the daughter of John R Hughes and Sarah [Kelsey] Hughes. She was born the 18th of September 1867 and in 1870 lived in Independence, Inyo, California with her parents and siblings. By 1880 Kate's mother was remarried to Joseph B Swearingen and the family was living in Bishops Creek, Inyo, California. Kate was briefly married to a man named Davis but he died before the 1900 census when Kate is listed as a widow living in Tuolumne County, California. In about 1901 Kate married Frank L Bortells and they had a son Phillip in 1904. Kate died in Los Angeles on 5 Apr 1951.
