STERLING - Lawrence E. Viering, 88, of Sterling, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at Coventry Living Center in Sterling.
He was born June 27, 1923, in Sterling, the son of Emil and Hazel (Presbrey) Viering. He was a 1948 graduate of the University of Illinois. He married Mary Lou McKevitt Nov. 8, 1952, in Sterling. Lawrence worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. in Sterling for 35 years, retiring as manager of sales. After his retirement, he obtained another degree from Sauk Valley Community College and was a part-time instructor for several years, which he greatly enjoy.
He was a die-hard Fighting Illini, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. He spent 20 years being a winter visitor to Arizona, where he enjoyed watching the Cubs' spring training. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling. He was known as a true bargain shopper.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou; daughter, Julie Bowman of Litchfield Park, Ariz.; three sons, Robert Viering of Faith, S.D., William Viering of Phoenix and John Viering of Torrance, Calif.; four grandchildren, Mary (Justin) Woods of Herrin, Haley Esgar of Rockford, Taylor Viering of Naperville and Lauren Viering of Sterling; and one great-grandchild, Carter Woods.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Joan Viering; one brother, Robert Viering; three sisters, Helen Fell, Sue Schoenwetter and Florence Viering; and son-in-law, Michael Bowman.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald Ahles, celebrant, officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.
Memorial contributions to the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
