Poseyville News dated September 13, 1907:
James Fitzgerrell, the twelve-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Fitzgerrell, living two and half miles northwest of town, fell from a beam in the barn loft to the driveway below Tuesday morning about half past eight and fractured his skull from which he died two and half hours later. James and a Claud Barker were playing in the barn and desiring to know the contents of a pigeon's nest near the ridge of the roof climbed upon a cross beam and on placing his hand into the nest, exclaimed, "There's something in it." Jerking his hand back as if frightened, he either jumped or fell to the driveway, striking a solid wooden step with the right side of his head and shoulder. The distance is twenty feet. If he jumped, he evidently intended to alight in the loft but in his excitement miscalculated and went to the floor. The hired man saw him fall, picked him up and carried him into the home. When picked up, he was unconscious and bleeding profusely from the mouth and ears. His father was on his way home from town at the time and was telephoned to return and secure medical aid. Dr. Boren was summoned, who on examination found that the right side of his skull was badly crushed and his pulse was growing feeble. This indicated that the end was near. James never regained consciousness and died at 11:30 o'clock having apparently suffered no pain. The accident was a shock to the community and many were the words of regret expressed over the sad affair and of sympathy for the parents in their bereavement, deprived of the companionship of a bright, and only son, of the hope in a promising youth. James Fitzgerrell was born in 1895 and died September 10, 1907, aged 12 years. He was one of the three children of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Fitzgerrell, being the only son. He passed the greater part of his life on the farm where he was born and died. James was a great favorite of the children of his age. The funeral was held at the home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning. Rev. Farmer of the Methodist church of this place officiating. The attendance was quite large and the floral tributes many and beautiful. A male quartet of this place and a ladies quartet of Stewartsville furnished the music. After the funeral ceremonies the remains were laid to rest in the family cemetery on the old family homestead. The family of the deceased have the sympathy of all in this their days of bereavement.
