Roy Blakley, 90

Funeral services for Roy Blakley, 90, Stratford, were held Thursday, March 9, 1989 at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Stratford. Rev. Willis Grand conducted the 1:30 p.m. service. Interment was held in Oakwood Cemetery, Stratford. Graveside services were held by Frederick Sonksen American Legion Post 576, Stratford. Arrangements were completed by the Stark, Welin Funeral Home, Stratford.

Mr. Blakley passed away Monday, March 6 at his home in Stratford.

During the service Margaret Erickson sang, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand" accompanied by Cleo Bell. The honorary bearers were Bob Carlson, Leon Stark, Roy Fisher, Neil Sturtz, Ray Fostberg, Gene Phillips, Dayton Passmore. Bearers were Dale Kane, Bob Hudson, Ed Spurling, Warren Scott, LuVerne Angstrom and Verlyn Westrum.

Roy Blakley was born on Tuesday, May 10, 1898 in Kingsport, TN. He was the son of Nathan and Florence (Leedey) Blakley.

Roy married Lorraine Dew on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1925 at Omaha. Roy worked in Iowa and Illinois coal mines and moved to Rippey in 1937 where he worked for the Farmer's Mutual Telephone Co. In 1942 Roy moved to Buffalo Center where he was employed by the same company.

In 1943 the Blakleys moved to Stratford where Roy managed Stratford Mutual Telephone Co.. Roy retired in 1966. During World War I Roy served in the United States Army in France in the 32nd Engineer Battalion. Mrs. Blakley passed away in 1982.

Roy was a member of the Stratford Lions Club, American Legion Post 576, Retired Association of Coalminers at Boone and the Tom Griffith Chapter of Telephone Pioneers.

Survivors include a son William R. Blakley, Dumont; brother, Frank Blakley, Des Moines; sister, Jessie Robbins, Des Moines; two grandsons and one great-great grandson.
