John Pace and Elizabeth Jones were married in North Carolina. Prior to the year 1800 they made their way to Chesterfield So. Carolina with his brothers William and Frederick. He and his family are listed in the 1800 U. S. Census of Chesterfield Co., SC. He purchased a small farm in that County in 1803. The next year he moved with his family to Tennessee and while there in about 1804 his son, James Dempsey was born. The next year they went to Kentucky where his son William was born in 1807.

When his brother Frederick died in 1807, John took two of his older sons and left Kentucky for the Tombigbee Settlement in Mississippi to help Frederick's widow Jinny. John is shown on the Mississippi Territorial Special Census in 1808 with two sons under 21. This area is now known as Clarke County Ala. (West Bend). They lived on a plantation about two miles above Coffeeville until shortly after John's death in 1821. After John's death most of this family moved to Copiah Co. Mississippi. His son Isham was the first to leave. He is shown on the Copiah Co. Tax Records in 1823 with his brother Stephen and his mother Elizabeth.

John's son William did not go to Mississippi but instead went to Marengo Co., Ala. After several years William carried his family to Ouachita Co., Ark.

Mrs Elizabeth Pace and her children remained in Copiah Co. until Stephen died in1837. Elizabeth died a short time later and John's sons Dempsey, Thomas, Richmond, Jesse, and his daughter Mary Small all moved to Newton Co., Ms. some of the other children returned to Clarke Co. Ala.
