Death of Capt. H.L. Dennard.
At eight o'clock, last Friday evening, Capt. Hugh L. Dennard died at his residence in Perry. For more than a year he suffered from what was said to be a cancer on the right foot, and the blood poisoning resulting therefrom doubtless hastened his death, which was almost momentarily expected for ten days previous.
His funeral was preached at the Baptist church Sunday morning by Dr. B.F. Tharp, assisted by Dr. J.S. Key, of Macon, and Rev. J.M. Marshall, of Perry. The burial took place at Evergreen Cemetery at about twelve o'clock, attended by as large a crowd as we ever saw at a burial here. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers: C.C. Duncan, Wm. Brunson, J.D. Martin, W.J. Moore, F.M. Houser, F.S. Cater, R.N. Holtzclaw, T.M. Killen, C.E. Gilbert, R.J. Smith.
Capt. Dennard was 83 years of age on Sunday before he died on Friday, and owned more property in Houston than any other man in the county. He was born in Washington county, in 1803, and moved to Houston in 1834. He became a member of the Baptist church in 1846. He has led an active life being a practical farmer most of the time.
His extensive business relations made him, perhaps, better known than any other man in the county and they are not few who cause to remember him with feelings of gratitude. His loss will be sorely felt.
Of his immediate family he leaves a widow, one son, Mr. E.L. Dennard, of Perry, and one daughter, Mrs. D.M. Hughes of Twiggs county.
Among the last words he uttered were, "I wish to live only that I may do more good than I have ever done." With that sentiment in his heart, his dissolution surely meant only the passage to a home in the better world.
A life well worn with years has been claimed by the Maker. We heartily sympathize with the relatives in their sore bereavement.

Note that his obit says that he was born in 1803 and the marker says 1800. In this case, I went with the marker date.
