She was a graduate of the Keystone State Normal School at Kutztown, PA. She taught school for several years. She was appointed a missionary to Japan by the Board of Foreign Missions of the [German] Reformed Church in 1885 and arrived the next year. She married her missionary colleague Rev. William E. Hoy on December 27, 1887 in Tokyo, Japan. They had six children: Carl W Witmer Hoy [stillborn], William Edwin Hoy Jr., Gertrude Blanche Hoy , Mabel Ruth (Hoy ) Kaier, David Schneder Hoy and Charles McCauley Hoy. Her two daughters also were missionaries in China. Mary was forced to flee China in the 1930s but returned.
Mary Hoy was active as a teacher and founded several schools. She died in Hankow, Hunan, China.

As a member of the Norwegian team, he won the silver medal in the gymnastics team event in 1908. Kiær drowned in a river in Hunan, China, while working for the Norwegian Lutheran Mission.
