AIKEN, Feb. 25 - (Special) - James Bruce Coleman, 69, former head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina, died Feb. 21, in Vienna, Austria, after a sudden illness.
Born and reared in Aiken County he was a son of the late William Milton and Irene Prothro Coleman. After attending local schools, he was graduated from the University of South Carolina with honors.
Mr Coleman then accepted an appointment to West Point. but after one year had to resign because of defective vision. Upon recommendation of West Point authorities, he was appointed commandant of Peacock Military Academy, El Paso, Texas.
Mr. Coleman later received his M. A. degree for Columbia University, and his Ph. D. from the University of California.
He served as instructor in mathematics at Georgia Tech for several years, then came to the University of South Carolina as professor of mathematics, later becoming head of the department. He was retired from that position a few years ago.
Dr. Coleman was in military service during World War I and was engaged in government work during World War II. In collaboration with a University of Pennsylvania professor, Dr. Coleman authored a textbook in Mathematics which was widely used for college instruction.
Dr. Coleman was member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbia and of the Cosmos Club. He maintained a home in Columbia, but since his retirement had traveled extensively in South and Central America, as well as in many European countries.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Fred A. Abernathy of Hickory, N.C., Mrs. W. E. LaGrone of Johnston and Mrs. B. E. Woodruff of Cedartown, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and burial will be at Aiken upon arrival of the body.
