AIRPORT DRIVE, MO — Bill L. Fenix Sr., age 81, of Airport Drive, Mo., passed away at 5:25 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011, at Freeman West Hospital. Born Aug. 20, 1929, in Joplin, he was the son of the late Roy L. and Fra Fenix. He lived in the area his lifetime, with the exception of during the Depression, when he lived with his family in California. He was a graduate of Joplin High School. Along with his late brother, Jack, Bill was a founding owner and operator of O&F Machine Products Co., where Bill served as president from 1956 to 1994, and continued to serve on its Board of Directors. Bill also served as a director at Commerce Bank from 1969 to 1998, and served on the Board of Big Brothers. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. As an entrepreneur, Bill was invited to China with a delegation representing the United States. A fair-minded and giving person, he enjoyed sharing his talents and resources with both his family and friends. The relationships he developed with co-workers at O&F went far beyond work. He truly enjoyed helping people with their development and his advice was often sought. A licensed pilot, he loved to fly and shared his plane with family and friends. He also shared his lake house, his boat, the house in Mexico in which you could always hear his favorite music. Bill loved planning events for family and friends which included trips to Canada and Alaska for fishing. Bill's abiding faith in God was a Fenix family cornerstone. On Jan. 14, 1950, he married Helen M. Lowe in Bentonville, Ark. In 2000, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, renewing their vows at the Mildred B. Cooper Chapel in Bella Vista. She preceded him in death Aug. 13, 2008. Bill was a devoted caregiver to Helen, the love of his life, during her illness. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Taylor Fenix; and four sisters, Madelyn Hayes, Marguerite CampVane, Virginia Smith and Gerry Pierson. Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca Hoover and husband, Bradley, of Joplin, Jan Shipley and husband, Michael, of Lowell, Ark., and Linda Schell and husband, Rocky, of Webb City; one son, Bill Fenix and wife, Kenda, of Seneca, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Gretchen Irwin Sumpter, Scott Sumpter, Elizabeth Hoover, Tisha Lilly, Christan Schell, Jacqueline Schell, Bill Fenix III and Tucker Fenix; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9th, at First Community Church with Charlie King, minister officiating. O&F families will be seated as a group. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park with family members serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon. Center in care of the mortuary.
