Son of John Hawley and Hannah (Rose) Hawley. On 23 April 1801 he married Elizabeth B. Matteson in Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont. They had ten children: Ira, Nyrum, Roseanne, Roswell, Serriah, Clarissa, Emily, Henry, Jane, and Myron.
