Daughter of Michael Fendel and Franziska "Frances" Sauer, she came to the United States with her brother (Michael) and parents on July 6, 1849, landing in New York. The family settled in Spencer County, Indiana.

She married Joseph Thoma on April 21, 1863.

Together they had ten children:
Franz Joseph, Joseph, Johanna, Mary, Francis, Victoria, Katie, Anna, Bertha Margaret, and Rosa Thoma
