Was 65 Years of Age and Had Lived Nearly All His Life in Carthage

Joseph McMillan, former hardware merchant and a resident of Carthage for 58 years, died last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. A. Wiggins, in Tulsa, OK., where he had been critically ill for a number of weeks.
Mr. McMillan, who has been retired from active business for several years because of bad health went to Tulsa, accompanied by Mrs. McMillan, before Christmas for a visit at the home of his daughter.
He had not been able to return home and three weeks ago he became seriously sick.
After his life had been despaired of and his children had all been summoned to Tulsa to be with him he took a turn for the better the latter part of last week and it was thought he might be able to return to Carthage soon. Two of his children had departed for their homes and Miss Margaret McMillan who had been with her father for two weeks, expected to return to Carthage yesterday preparatory to taking up her duties as a teacher in the Mark Twain school. But yesterday Mr. McMillan grew suddenly worse and the end came last night.
Death was due to high blood pressure, cardiac asthma and a complication of troubles following a stroke suffered about two years ago.
Mr. McMillan was 65 years of age. He was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania in July 1865, and came here with his parents the late Mr. and Mrs. William McMillan in 1872. He was educated in the Carthage public schools and later completed the course at Shattuck Military school at Faribault, Minnesota. He was long a prominent figure in state military circles. He served as first lieutenant of the Carthage Light Guard when Col. W. K. Caffee was captain of the organization. At the same time B. B. Allen was second lieutenant of the Light Guard, the three chief officers all being graduates of the Shattuck school. He served in the Spanish-American War as adjutant of the second regiment with the rant of captain.
Mr. McMillan was for about 30 years in the hardware business here, as a member of the firm of Keim & McMillan, which afterwards was incorporated as the Keim & McMillan Hardware Company. The business was bought in August 1919 by the Carter Hardware Company, since which time Mr. McMillan has been most of the time out of active business pursuits.
He was married on June 12, 1889 to Miss Fannie Wells, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Wells.
Besides Mrs. McMillan, four children survive, Brice, now Mrs. Frank Rossman of Mobile, Alabama; Frances, now Mrs. C. A. Wiggins, Tulsa, OK.; Margaret, a teacher in the Mark Twain school here, and Joseph, who holds a position with the Skelly Oil Company in Wichita.
The body arrived from Tulsa on this afternoon's Frisco train, accompanied by members of the family.
Funeral services will be at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the residence on South Garrison. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
