Obituary:
A loss for the Island Community...
The Island and Manatee County Community lost a native Cortezian, long-time Anna Maria Island resident and Holmes Beach's first police chief when H.W. "Snooks" Adams died this Monday at the age of 92.
Mr. Adams was born in Cortez [actually Tampa on April 24, 1918. He spent most of his life in Cortez and on Anna Maria Island except for when he served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. When Mr. Adams returned home after the war, he started a business installing seawalls.
In 1953, he began working for the Bradenton Beach Police Department as an auxiliary officer, then, in 1955 he signed up with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office and was responsible for patrolling the island. When the City of Holmes Beach decided to start its own police department the city hired Mr. Adams as chief.
His wife of more than 40 years, Liz, describes her husband as "a charming soul that would make you laugh."
"Snooks" legacy will include his work with children with the goal of keeping them active and out of trouble. What started as a day in 1954 when he took a dozen boys to the beach for food, fun and games, became an annual event that is celebrated every year as "Snooks" Adams Kids Day. "Snooks" was also known for his jokes, delivering hand-picked flowers to local island restaurants and for his hand-crafting and painting of small whimsical items. Gov. Lawton Chiles named "Snooks" Florida Citizen of the Year on his 80th birthday.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Georgia Lee Jones, of Bradenton; a son, Randy, of Tallahassee; a sister, 3 brothers, 5 grand-children and several great grand- children.
The Manatee County Republican Party mourns the loss of "Snooks" Adams, is grateful for his dedication to local children and sends its deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers to Mrs. Adams and his family at this difficult time.
Funeral Information: A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Crosspointe Fellowship, 8605 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to the Anna Maria Privateers' Snooks Adams Kids Day, Crosspointe Fellowship or any charity of your choice.
