Gene A. Atkinson, 90, passed away at 6:55 a.m. Friday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Nov. 27, 1921, in Orange County, he was the son of Clarence Ray "Hop" and Nellie Lorraine (Cornwell) Atkinson. He married Betty June Mayden April 13, 1941, and they were married 63 years. She preceded him in death Oct. 4, 2004. His second marriage was to Allien (Magner) Bugh August 2005, and she preceded him in death Nov. 30, 2008.

He retired from Carpenter Body Works and was a 1939 graduate of Paoli High School.

Gene was a U.S. Army veteran of the World War II and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Paoli Masonic Lodge No. 119 F&AM, and the Mitchell Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are children, Bradley Gene (Cheryl) Atkinson of Centerville, Jerry Wayne (Carol) Atkinson of Mitchell, Patricia Ray (Monte Rager) Atkinson of Orleans, Amy Lynn (Rob) Parker of Mitchell and Charlotte Rose (Buddy Kirkman) Atkinson of Bedford; a brother, James Lee Atkinson of Bedford; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

His parents; both wives; and son, Eric Lee Atkinson, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Lee Hupp officiating.

Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.
