Mr. Walter Eugene "Gene" Smith, 68, of New Windsor, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at Carroll Hospice's Dove House following an extended battle with lymphoma.

Born December 20, 1942 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late James Eugene and Ella Mae Comer Smith. He was the husband of Nancy Lawrence Smith, with whom he would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in August.

Mr. Smith was of the Methodist faith. He was a 1961 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School. He was a member of both the New Windsor and Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Companies, served as a delegate to the Maryland State Firemen's Association for 25 years, in 1997-98 served as president of the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen's Association and was also a member of the Carroll County Advanced Technical Rescue team. He was a member of Plymouth Lodge #143 A.F. & A.M. of Union Bridge. He had been employed with Lehigh Portland Cement Co. of Union Bridge for 38 years prior to retirement.

He enjoyed farming, raising beef cattle and coached girls' Recreation Council softball and the Leaseway team in the Carroll County women's softball league.

In addition to his wife he is survived by 2 daughters, Terri Harbaugh and husband Tom of New Windsor and Clarissa Owens and husband Alan of Belle Chasse, LA; 4 grandchildren, twin grandsons, Cory and Travis Harbaugh and Madelyn and Carly Owens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Jane Baumgardner and a brother, James R. "Bub" Smith.

A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with Deacon Charles Barnhart, officiating. Interment will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery, near Linwood. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. The family requests memorial contributions be made to The Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
