Awarded for actions during World War II

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Don D. Adams (NSN: 0-104438), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot in Bombing Squadron EIGHT (VB-3), embarked in U.S.S. HORNET (CV-8), during the Battle of Midway. On 6 June he participated in the bombing and strafing of fleeing enemy forces. In the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire he courageously, without regard for his own safety, attacked the enemy and obtained a near miss which damaged an enemy ship. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service and contributed to the victory achieved by our forces.

Adams (NSN: 0-104438), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight from 19 September to 16 October 1942. Lieutenant Commander Adams completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.
