Sister Jeremy (Evelyn) Hall , OSB, (90) St. Joseph July 20, 1918 – November 15, 2008 The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, at Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict's Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn., for Sister Jeremy Hall, who died on Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Tuesday, November 18, from 1-6 p.m. or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict's Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Wednesday, November 19, at 3:30 p.m.

S. Jeremy (Evelyn) was born on July 20, 1918, to William and Theresa (Schmidt) Hall in Foley, Minn. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, and graduated from the College of Saint Benedict with a B.A. in sociology. She earned an M.A. in philosophy from The Catholic University of America, an M.A. in theology and Ph.D. in religious studies from Marquette University, and undertook additional studies at St. Louis University and Notre Dame. On January 4, 1938, S. Jeremy entered Saint Benedict's Monastery, was received into the novitiate on July 2, 1940, made her first monastic profession on July 11, 1941, and perpetual profession on July 11, 1944.

S. Jeremy's ministry in education began at St. Joseph's Orphanage, St. Paul; Saint Benedict's Boys School in Altoona, Wis.; and Cathedral High School, St. Cloud. She taught at the College of Saint Benedict; Saint John's University; Blue Cloud Abbey, Marvin, S.D.; Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.; Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa; and Marquette University in Milwaukee. Travel study grants offered opportunities to travel in Europe and Asia. An extensive part of S. Jeremy's ministry was in directing retreats and giving spiritual direction to many religious communities and individuals, especially in the 22 years she lived as a hermit on monastery grounds. She visited India, where she met Mother Teresa, with whom she corresponded. S. Jeremy was a prolific writer, and produced many letters, articles, meditations and books. Her books were The Full Stature of Christ: The Ecclesiology of Virgil Michel, OSB, 1976; texts to accompany the O Antiphons in 1976; and Silence, Solitude, Simplicity: A Hermit's Love Affair With a Noisy, Crowded and Complicated World, 2007. In 2006, S. Jeremy retired to Saint Scholastica Convent.

She is survived by the members of her Benedictine community, her brother William of Camarillo, Calif., one niece and four nephews.
