Military BIO by John Christeson

A career World War II and Korean War Air Force veteran who served 21 years and retired in 1962 as a Lt. Colonel. Jim enlisted in the Air Corps after Pearl Harbor and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. navigator. He trained with a B-24 Group which entered combat from a base in Italy. On a bombing mission his plane was damaged and he and 7 other crewmembers, were forced to bail out over Yugoslavia. Landing safely they evaded the Germans for 11 months before coming under Allied control. He later wrote a book about his experiences titled "Eight Bailed Out.

After the war Jim earned his pilot wings. During the Korean War he flew the first C 119 across the Pacific to Korea. He flew combat paradrops, the Inchon Invasion and the evacuation of the Marines from the Chosen Reservoir where he and his crew were the first ever to drop a bridge from an aeroplane.

During his service Jim flew 43 combat missions during World War II and 92 combat missions during the Korean War. He was awarded21 medal including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, and the Purple Heart.
