Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry, a unit that was eventually reorganized into the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on June 21, 1865, for "faithful and meritorious services during the war." During his post-war career, he served as Surveyor General of Nebraska and Iowa from 1869 to 1871. General Livington was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLLUS) and the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.).
