I witnessed the death-bed scene of my dear friend and leader, Mr. D. P. Clower, our nearest neighbor, a Christian much beloved by all: He knew my spiritual infirmities, and often tried to console me, assuring me that he prayed for me daily. Just before he died he called several of his young friends around him, and spoke to them separately, begging and encouraging them to serve the Lord and meet him in heaven. He then called me and said:

"Cretia, you are young and timid; you are letting the world and Satan cheat you out of your religion. I know your ways and God knows your heart. I am dying and want you to know that you have my approbation, my sympathy, my blessing. Put your trust in the Lord, and He will deliver you out of all trouble. God bless and save you. Meet me in heaven."

His strength was almost gone, but he rallied as if fanned by the wings of a passing angel, and said to brother Sam, who was his assistant class-leader, and to Mr. Wm. Harris, who afterward married his daughter: "Sing me that sweet song about the angels.
They are from glory come; they are around my bed; they're in my room. All is well." When they had sun it he said: "Now I am ready, waiting for my little spark of light to flicker out." Then, folding his hands upon his breast, he passed away to greet his good wife, who only two weeks previous had fled in triumph to the glory world, and it was thought by his physicians that excessive grief for her was the cause of his death.

He left us all in tears of sorrow and sympathy for our own loss of so dear a friend, and also for the sad fate of his loved ones, so dependent and heart-broken. There stood his aged father, Uncle Daniel Clower, of sainted memory, trembling on the verge of the tomb; there lay his precious mother, who for four years had been helpless and speechless from paralysis; there were his four precious gems, two sons and two daughters, who, though not very small, were, nevertheless, fit subjects for parental protection and training. These dear children were my school-mates. I loved them, and my sympathy for them was very great, but it was only sympathy.
