James Washington Boone (Boon) was born on May 28, 1844 to Achen and Dorcas Chesnutt Boone, in Sampson County, North Carolina. He passed away on May 27, 1927, as a result of chronic Hepatitis and Dysentery. He is buried in the Boone Family Cemetery in Lumberton, Robeson County, North Carolina. He married twice in his lifetime, first to Mary Eliza Powers on May 25, 1876 in Howellsville, Robeson County, North Carolina. They had three sons; Wilbur, Josiah and John, all three born in North Carolina. His second marriage was to Mary Catherine Humphrey, on April, 10, 1890, in Saint Paul's, Robeson County, North Carolina.
During the War Between the States, he enlisted at the age of 18 on February 9, 1863, at Lumberton, Robeson County, North Carolina, as a Private in Company E, 51st Infantry Regiment of North Carolina. On June 1, 1864, he was captured at Coal Harbor, Virginia, by the Union Army and was taken as a Prisoner of War. He was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, and was imprisoned for one year before being released on June 16, 1865 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York.
He lived the remainder of his life in Lumberton, Robeson County, North Carolina.
