Dr. Donald Claude Henard, 69, of Greeneville, a retired orthopedic surgeon and widely-known community figure, died Thursday at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Henard was born Oct. 21, 1938, in Greene County. He was the son of the late Dr. Hal and Mildred Henard.

He was a 1956 graduate of Greeneville High School.

Following his graduation, he attended Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., Clemson University in South Carolina, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

He then entered the United States Army.

At the conclusion of his Army duties, Dr. Henard completed his undergraduate studies at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.

He then pursued his medical training at the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis.

Following medical school, Dr. Henard entered an orthopedic residency program at the renowned Campbell Clinic in Memphis.

He then completed an additional specialty program in orthopedic hand surgery at the University of Iowa before returning to Memphis, where he entered private medical practice as an orthopedic surgeon.

Upon retirement, he and his wife of 49 years, the former Jean Deaton, returned in 2001 to Greene County, where they had built a home.

Dr. Henard was an active farmer and in addition, gave many hours of service to the community in various ways.

An active member of Asbury United Methodist Church, he also participated in a number of Greeneville civic groups as well as other local organizations in the fields of government, economic development, education, and health.

Local activities in which he was involved included the Greene County Partnership, of which he was a former chairman, and the Greeneville-Greene County Airport Authority, of which he was the current chairman.

He also served as a trustee of Tusculum College, the Laughlin Memorial Hospital Foundation, and the Greeneville City Schools Foundation, and was a member of the board of directors of the Niswonger Foundation.

Survivors include, in addition to his wife, one son and daughter-in-law: Dr. David Hal Henard and Cheryl Henard of Wake Forest, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law: Dr. Deborah Henard MacFawn and Edward T. MacFawn of Knoxville; seven grandchildren: Michael Todd Henard, Robert Hal Henard, Elizabeth Blake Henard, Tristan Edward MacFawn, Ella Caroline MacFawn, Sophie Virginia MacFawn, and Lila Grace MacFawn; a sister and brother-in-law: Mary Henard Love and John C. Love; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jack and Joyce Deaton, Mary Katherine Deaton of Johnson City, and Jonnie and Jimmy Pierce of Greeneville; and his special nieces and nephews: Jim Pierce, Julia P. Cali, Amanda D. Leach, David Deaton, Kayte Deaton, Chris Buckles, Matthew Buckles, and Susan Brandon.

He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Todd Henard.

The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. today at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

The funeral service will follow visitation at 7 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. David Woody and the Rev. Jeannie Higgins will officiate.

A private committal service will be held on Sunday in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Wells, Charles Brooks, Jason Brandon, Lloyd "Shorty" Harmon, Edward T. MacFawn, Scott Niswonger, Richard Roberts, and Chuck Whitfield.

Honorary pallbearers will be the physicians and staff of Laughlin Memorial Hospital and Ralph "Buddy" Boswell, Terry Leonard, Bill E. Ricker, Oliver "Buzz" Thomas, Tom Garland Sr. and Ray Adams.

Because of Dr. Henard's lifelong commitment to education, the family has requested that memorials be directed to the Laughlin Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Niswonger Foundation for the purpose of providing scholarships to deserving students
