OLYMPIA -- Glen Arthur Courtney, 79, a former Anatone businessman and Pomeroy farmer, died at St. Peter Hospital here Friday of causes related to age. He was a resident of Yelm, Wash.
He was born March 6, 1918, to Arthur G. and Ada Minnie Mallory Courtney at Enterprise, Ore. He was raised on a farm on Grouse Flat in Oregon and attended school near the homestead there until it burned to the ground when he was in eighth grade.
He married Alta Carmen (Mickey) Madison June 29, 1938, at Pomeroy. The couple farmed at Oregon until 1946, when they moved to Clarkston. They moved to Anatone in 1947 and operated the Anatone Cafe and Garage until the fall of 1950. They farmed at Pomeroy until harvest ended in 1951.
They then moved to Tumwater, Wash., where he worked for the parks department. He retired in 1978 and they moved to Yelm.
She died Sept. 5, 1995.
He is survived by a daughter, Glenda Olsen of Tenino, Wash.; a son, Gary W. Courtney of Yelm; two brothers, Bob and Bill Courtney, both of Clarkston; a sister, Neva Barnes of Clarkston; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Olympic Funeral Home Chapel at Tumwater. The Rev. Tom McCormick of Olympia will officiate. A private inurnment service will be held.
