Nila Jean Applegate
September 17, 1935 January 9, 2012

Nila Jean Applegate, 76, of Martinsville passed from this life at 11:20 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012 at her residence surrounded by the love and support of her family.

Nila was born in Gosport, Indiana on September 17, 1935 to the late Gerald Eugene "Gene" and Bernardine Annette (Hodges) Myers. She lived most of her younger life in Owen County and moved to Martinsville in the summer of 1962.

Following graduation from Gosport High School in 1953, she attended one year of college at Indiana State University. During the 1950's she worked as a bookkeeper for Crowell-Collier in Indianapolis and also worked as a waitress at the Candlelight Inn and a carhop at Frisch's Big Boy, both in Martinsville.

On June 24, 1955 she married Jack L. Applegate. He preceded her in death on February 14, 2003.

Nila had a zeal for collecting antiques, but any who knew her would attest that her greatest passion was her family, especially her grandchildren. She was undoubtedly a devoted wife, mother & grandmother. She also enjoyed camping and boating on the Ohio River, gardening and making raspberry jelly.

She leaves behind a host of family and friends including her sons, Mike (wife, Becky) Applegate of Gosport and Mark (wife, Kim) Applegate of Mooresville; daughters, Karen Myers of Las Vegas and Sharon (husband, Stan) Barnes of Gosport; brothers, Larry (wife, Georgeanna) Myers of Bloomington and David Myers of Cloverdale; sister, Maxine Mullin of Spencer; son-in-law, Mike Edwards of Martinsville; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of nearly 48 years, Jack Applegate in 2003; daughter, Cheryl Edwards in 2010; and an infant child.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, January 13th from 4-8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center. A Celebration of Life Service will be on Saturday, Jan. 14th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Samaria Cemetery in Paragon.
