Roswell Bartlett lived in Huntington, Connecticut when he enlisted in the Union Army in 1862.

He was a Private in the 11th US Colored Heavy Artillery Co. C. The 11th CHA fought in the Fort Jackson, Louisana area and north along the Mississippi river during the Civil War.

Bartlett was discharged disabled in 1864. He returned home and took up farming on a plot of land in Monroe, CT

In 1876 Bartlett was senenced to life in prison for the rape of a Monroe school teacher. He spent the rest of his life at Wethersfield State Prison.
