Preston Thomas Williams Bayley was the son of Martha A. "Mattie" Strother and unknown Williams. She married Thomas Spooner Bayley in about 1868. The 1870 census shows Preston's surname was Williams, but for the remainder of his life, his surname was listed as Bayley or Bailey. I don't know if he was adopted by his step-father but he did take the name Bayley.
