He was born on January 1, 1922 in Hartford, Connecticut to Harold Edward Wilson Sr. and Irene Charlotte Southwick. His parents were living on Hudson Street at the time; that street ends on Jefferson Street near Hartford Hospital. Irene walked from their home on Hudson Street to the hospital when she was ready to have her first baby.
When he was old enough to babysit for his brother and sister, his parents often went out several nights a week. He attended the Washington Street school until 1936, when he completed eighth grade. Harold went to Bulkeley High School and graduated in the class of 1940. He participated in several sports. The Wilson family lived in a large apartment building on 1668 Broad Street opposite Trinity College. Harold was not real fond of his given name and he had several nicknames throughout his life including Hal, in high school, June for Junior, Buddy in the navy but most people knew him as Bud Wilson.
After high school, he worked on a farm in Bloomfield, CT, walking several miles both ways to save money. He entered the Navy in 1942 and served in the Navy Air Corp in the South Pacific as an Aviation Ordinanceman (AOM3). Before he reported to basic training, he went to a square dance in Hartford and met Estelle Vivian Jensen from the nearby town of Windsor. They kept up an active correspondence and when he returned from basic training, they became engaged. Bud bought Estelle a hope chest that was the nicest piece of furniture in her family's home. They were married in Windsor on May 9, 1945 while he had a 30 day leave. The wedding was arranged in 10 days and one of his crew members was best man. They had three sons, Keith, Mark and Craig.
Discharged in October of 1945, he was determined to get a job with the Southern New England Telephone Company (SNET) even though there were no openings. His persistence paid off and he was hired as an Installer/Repairman for SNET; he was employed for over 38 years until retirement in 1983.
Bud was an avid golfer and had four holes in one. He loved to spend time with his wife and family and was a wonderful father and grandfather. In later years, his health continue to decline due to congestive heart failure but he bore it all without complaint and was always happy just to putter around the house. When he died in 1993, Bud and Estelle had just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversery.
