Mary Virginia Abernathy, 81, of Waco, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at a local nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at the funeral home.


Mary was born in Clarksville, Texas, and was raised by her grandmother, Martha Shoffner, and aunt and uncle, Faye and O.V. Shoffner. She married Wallace W. Abernathy on July 10, 1947, and was the proud mother of five boys. Upon the death of her husband, Mary was left to raise her two youngest boys. Mary worked at Piggly Wiggly and Robinson School District. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed crocheting, dancing and many other crafts. She was a member of Bellmead Calvary Baptist Church and a past member of Oaklawn Baptist Church.


Mary was also preceded in death by a son, Jackie Abernathy, on Feb. 9, 1973.


Survivors include her sons, William "Butch" Abernathy and wife, Janice, of China Spring, Danny Abernathy and wife, Mary Beth, of Lubbock, Steven Abernathy and wife, Angie, of Cypress, and Mark Abernathy and wife, Lisa, of Weatherford; grandchildren, Billy Abernathy and wife, Penny, Michelle Abernathy, Eric Abernathy and wife, Stacie, Michael Abernathy, Zachary Abernathy and wife, Marissa, Andy Abernathy, Kayla Abernathy, Dakota Abernathy, Allison Abernathy and William W. Abernathy; 10 great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Joyce Wisinger, of Bagota, and Eileen Abernathy, of Spring; several nieces and nephews, and many other family members and friends.
