William L. Akers, 60, rural North Manchester, died at approximately 4:15 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, of natural causes near Wabash County roads 900 N and 400 E.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1943, in Prestonsburg, Ky., to Grundy Logan and Irene (Hannah) Akers. His mother survives in Warsaw. He married Sharon Diann Baker on Feb. 23, 1968. She died on Oct. 3, 1992. He then married Janet S. Lance on Oct. 23, 1993. She survives.

He graduated from Pierceton High School and was a driver for Frontier Transport Company. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post No.286, Loyal Order of Moose No.1518, and Fraternal Order of Eagles, all of North Manchester.

Also surviving are a son, Dan Gagnon, Huntington; two stepdaughters, Michelle Proffitt, LaFontaine, and Mrs. Casey (Jennifer) Hartley, North Webster; two brothers, James (Barb) Akers and Jerry Akers, both of Warsaw; three sisters, Mrs. Vern (Joyce) Prater and Hazel Akers, both of Warsaw, and Mrs. Rick (Linda) Cook, Larwill; one grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary North Manchester Chapel. Pastor J.P. Freeman will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Servia.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Preferred memorials are to the American Heart Association.
