=== E.J. McClenahan ===
Elijah J., third child and eldest son of Henry and Sally McClenahan was born in Rush county, Indiana 10 July 1827. When the desire to push further west came to this worthy couple, they brought their family to Illinois and settled upon the homestead that is still a part of the McClanahan estate. This was the home of the family for many years and here died the father, the mother and a younger son, Daniel. The son Elijah was but seven years of age when in 1834, the family came to the then sparsely settled Stark county and he shared the hardships of pioneer life. He received his education in the select schools of that period and later bent his energies upon the task of converting a wide expanse of unbroken prairie into well tilled farms.
On 16 December 1873, he married in Galesburg, Margaret A., eldest daughter of William D. thomas of Knox county. The following year, 1874, they removed to the farm which was ever afterward his home and there were born their five children.
On 14 January 1909, Mr. McClenahan suffered a stroke of paralysis from the effects of which he departed this life, surrounded by his family on February 2, 1909, probably the oldest settler of Stark county.
A quiet, dignified man, of unsullied honor and integrity, he lived respected by the entire community, a good neighbor, a most loyal citizen. His home and its inmates were most dealt to him and he prepared his sons and daughter to occupy worthy positions in the activities of the world. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, being raised to the degree of Master Mason early in the 60's, in the Toulon lodge. Demitting from that, he became a charter member of the Stark lodge No. 501 in LaFayette.
Of his close relatives, he is survived by one sister, Mary of Thayer, Missouri, his wife, his daughter, Edna D, and his sons, Daniel H., Carl D., Frank C. and Bert C.
The funeral services were at the home on Thursday, February 4 and were conducted by Reverend J.T. Bliss of Monica, Illinois, able assisted by Reverend F.J. Giddings, of the Methodist Episcopal church of LaFayette and a quartet of men's voices from Toulon. Interment was made in the family cemetery on the old homestead.
Those who came from a distance to attend the service and bring their sympahty to the family were Mr. and Mrs. George Mills and family and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wolcott of Kewanee, William Thomas of Elwood, Nebraska and William Worley of Henry, Illinois.###
