John L. Englert excelled in everything he put his mind to from sports to several languages. When he joined the USAF in April of 1951 he had already mastered German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian and Russian at Franklin and Marshall College, University of Havana and Syracuse University. While on assignment in Washington, DC with his wife Dorothy they made plans for him to become an air attaché for the Air Force. To do so required him to learn to fly and get his wings. On 16 Apr 1954, 1st Lt. John Englert of Ephrata, Pa., the student, and Perley DeFazio a civilian flight instructor for the US Air Force were killed when their plane crashed near the Malden, Mo. Air Base. Unfortunately John's future was cut short do to a tragic plane crash.
