SAMUEL LARKIN, 21, KILLED BY FREIGHT ENGINE AT ESTHER -- [The Lead Belt News/Friday, Oct. 13, 1922] -- Samuel Larkin, 21 years old, son of Mrs. James Larkin of Esther, and employed as a brakeman on the Missouri Illinois Railway was killed on the tracks near Esther, Monday night shortly after 11 o'clock. He had been employed in this capacity only three weeks, having formerly been employed in the freight depot of this company at Ste. Genevieve.
On Saturday night the crew of the freight train on which Larkin worked, were pulling in at the Y at Esther to make the turn. Larkin, who had been standing at the front of the engine, stepped down to throw the switch. The engine pulled slowly forward, at the same time watching for Larkin's signal that he had thrown the switch. Nearing the switch and not yet having received the signal the engineer stopped his train and began an investigation. He found Larkin under the engine.
The testimony at the inquest conducted by Coroner Hill at the Rinke undertaking rooms Tuesday morning tends to establish the fact that Larkin, in stepping down from the engine, caught his foot and was dragged beneath. His shoulder was badly crushed and he had been injured internally. He was dead when found. The wheels had not passed over his body.
After the inquest the remains were taken to the Larkin home at Esther. The funeral was held at the Esther Methodist Church Thursday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. Virgil Wilson, former pastor of the church but now located at Doe Run.
Interment was made at Woodlawn Cemetery.
