Ellis William Dent, 92, of Timberville, died on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Dent was born in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 23, 1916, and was the son of the late Andrew and Maybelle Ellis Dent.

He was a graduate of Washington Teacher College. He then went on to work as a sales manager with the Canteen Vending Co. in the District of Columbia for over 20 years. He also was a past president of the Lions Club.

In the mid-1960s, he purchased a farm in Timberville to retire, but continued working, raising Tennessee Walking horses on his farm. After moving to the Valley, he worked as an independent carrier for various newspapers over the past 40 years. Even up until April of this year, he was active delivering papers throughout the Valley.

In January 1980, he married his wife, who survives.

Additional surviving family members include his children and their spouses, which included two sons and five daughters, 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Marilyn Heishman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to your local Lions Club in his memory.
