MAIL PILOT KILLED
In Cleveland When Plane Crashed Down on Railroad Tracks
Cleveland, April 30 -- Preparations are being made today to return to his home in Chicago the body of air mail pilot J. T. Christensen, who late yesterday, crashed with his plane (in)to the Erie railroad tracks at Scranton and University Roads, S.W., dying instantly. His plane was reduced to a mass of wreckage. When the plane hit the tracks, the gasoline tank exploded and the body of the mail pilot was badly burned as a result.
Christensen's engine was missing, and he was forced to seek a landing. A dense fog obscured his vision, and his efforts to find the river or a vacant lot proved unavailing. Suddenly his engine failed and he dropped to the tracks.
Christensen's fight for life and safety was watched by hundreds. He was 31 years of age. He was well known in Cleveland and other Ohio towns having flown in the first aerial tournament held in Cleveland in August, 1919. He was married two years ago to Miss Lena Davis of Cleveland and the couple took a flying honeymoon trip from Cleveland to Akron and other Ohio cities.
