"Little Mother of the Regiment"
Agard led the work of the Women's Relief Cops during the Spanish American War raising more than $500 from a bazaar and fair to purchase cemetery lots for the deceased. While visiting her sons with the Third Iowa in Jacksonville, Agard was given the nickname "little Mother of the Regiment" for her willingness to help. With the outbreak of World War 1, Agard supervised the assembly of 1,200 comfort kits for American soldiers and raised $3,000. Agard played a fundamental role in the work of the MOUNT PLEASANT HOME in Dubuque including terms as president and member of the board of directors. She organized the local response to the Belgian Relief Fund and served as president of the Ladies of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) for three years and the General Fitzhugh Lee Auxiliary of the Spanish American War Veterans.
