Joseph married Lydia E Fuller on 3 Feb 1848 and they had three children: John, and twins Loren and Lois. Lydia died in 1851.
Joseph married Calista McDaniel on 17 Jul 1853 in Johnson County, Iowa. Calista was born in Ohio in 1835 and her family moved to Louisa Co, Iowa when she was a small child. Calista and Joseph had six children: Mary Elizabeth (died at the age of one month), Catharine(Beaston), Lydia (Zimmerman), Elias, Julia (Bridges), and Rose Anna (Taylor).
The family moved to Fremont County in 1860 and located at Plum Hollow and engaged in farming.
When living in Louisa County, Iowa, (1850s), Joseph united with the church known as "Winebenarians" or "Church of God." When he moved to Fremont County he became a member of the "Cambelite Christians." In 1872 he united with the Adventists and became a minister in that denomination. At the time of his death he was an Elder in the church at Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa.
Joseph died of catarrhal fever on 25 Jan 1880. He had been in poor health for many months. At the time of his death Calista was very ill with pneumonia and his mother, Catherine, came to see him a few hours before he died. His wife made a slow recovery from pneumonia, but Catherine was taken ill the day after he was buried, and died six days later.
