--She was 3rd of 7 children of Portland H. Warlick & wife Maggie McLean. Bertha's father died when she was 9. Her mother died when Bertha was 15. Bertha & her 2 older sisters were on their own, & the 4 younger siblings had to go live in an orphanage (Barium Springs in Iredell County, NC).
