St. George/Kanab, Utah - James Virgil "Hoot" Anderson, age 58, died Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah. He was born June 23, 1953 in Kanab, Utah to Virgil Ephraim Anderson and Vesta Erma Allen, and was raised in Panguitch for his early years. He married Vonnie Jessie Fleming, and was later divorced.

James worked as a heavy equipment operator for most of his life. He worked for a gold mine, and for Delray Jackson with Deseret Hills Construction. He went back to school at Dixie College and graduated with a two year degree as a certified auto mechanic.

James loved being around people. He was always friendly, and enjoyed being a huge flirt. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, playing yahtzee, fishing, camping, a good joke, drinking Dr. Pepper, cars, and made beautiful sand paintings.

Survivors include his children Samantha (Kinsley) Meldrum, Casey (Philippe) Miche, and Anthony Anderson; siblings Maria (Lorin) Johnson, Virginia (Butch) Blouch, Valorie (Max) Briggs, and Stacey Sharp; and grandchildren Damian James, Alexis Nicole, and Bonita Sky. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Nicholis James Anderson, and grandson Nicholas Lee Long.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Mosdell Mortuary in Kanab, Utah, with a viewing from 1:00-2:00 PM. Burial will be in the Kanab Cemetery.
