Larkin's middle name, Cleveland, is the maiden name of his maternal grandmother, Nancy Cleveland Reynolds (1777–1846).

Larkin served as a sergeant for the Union in Co H, 10th TN Cav during the Civil War. He served from 11/8/1863 to 8/1/1865, and was the only immediate family member not to join the Confederacy. He was listed as a miller in the 1880 census. His will was written on 5/16/1904 (Wilkes WB 7, p219).

Stokes H Brooks attended several churches in the area throughout his life, and was a Baptist minister for many years. He helped to organize Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church in 1850.

Stokes and Clarissa are buried in "the Dehart section at Hays, NC, in an unmarked grave." The cemetery is "on the Dehart Road before you get to the church. There is a deep curve. There is an old house there (in 2003). The old house is where Stokes lived." His obituary says that he joined Brier Creek Baptist Church, was ordained a deacon at Fishing Creek Church in 1839, and was a member of Dehart Baptist Church at his death.
