GREENSBORO — Helen Gaines Howerton-Lineberry, 92, died Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at her residence.

The family will visit with friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2011 at First Baptist Church. Her committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2012, at Westminster Gardens, and a Celebration of Her Life will follow at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 56 years. There will be a reception following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Helen was born in Asheville, NC, the daughter of Pattie Gaines Weakley and Thomas McClaskey Howerton. She graduated from Lee Edward High School, attended St. Genevieve of the Pines, graduated from Women's College (UNC-G), majoring in Fine Arts, and furthered her education at Traphagen School of Design and Fashion in New York City.

While growing up in Asheville, one of her fondest memories was that she and her brothers taught Charlie (Choo Choo) Justice how to play football in their front yard.

Early in her career, Helen taught high school English. Her professional life started in Asheville as an Interior Designer with an up-scale furniture store. During WW II, she did her part state-side and worked as a car mechanic.

Her talents were many - designing and making women's clothing, interior designing, and exploring the art of pottery - yet, painting and drawing were her passions. Helen's oil paintings, sketches, pen and inks, watercolors, and pottery won many awards in the artist community throughout the state. She annually gifted friends and family with her original pen and ink Christmas cards and verse, which were inspired from her favorite family settings and beliefs.

She actively supported her husband and family through the First Baptist Church of Asheville and Greensboro. In Greensboro, she was a member of the LOVE Sunday School Class.

Helen was also very active with her children's PTA's, Boy and Girl Scouts, board member of the YMCA/YWCA, Greensboro Symphony Guild, and Baptist Children's Home. She also served as president of the NC Legislature Sir Walter Raleigh Cabinet, Guilford College Board of Visitors, and Guilford Battleground Chapter of the DAR. Among her other community involvement, Helen was an officer and member of the Baptist Women's Mission Union (WMU), active in the Hamilton Lakes Garden Club, and teacher in the weekly Tuesday Bible Study Fellowship for Women. She recently was awarded the Good Shepherd Emblem Silver Star by the Boy Scouts of America.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Albert Shuler Lineberry, Sr.; a grand-daughter, Virginia Schenck Lineberry (Vere); brothers, Thomas McClaskey Howerton, Jr., and Joe Houston Howerton.

Her surviving family includes her brother, William Weakley Howerton of Boston, MA; daughters, Carole Gaines Lineberry-Moore and her husband, Sam, of Burlington, NC; Patricia Alice Lineberry-Ingold (Pal) and her husband, Mike; sons, Albert Shuler Lineberry, Jr. and his wife, Ginni; Thomas Howerton Lineberry; and Dr. William Scott Lineberry and his wife, Susan; grand-children, William Edward Clarke, III, Richard Maus Johnson, III (Beau) and his wife, Denise, William Albert Milks (Will) and his wife, Nicole, Joseph Wesley Milks (Joey), Lauren Mica Ingold, and Michael Douglas Ingold, Jr., Helen Howerton Lineberry-Houser and her husband, Trey, Dr. Lee Anne Lineberry-Saunders and her husband, Dr. Stuart Saunders, Taylor Howerton Lineberry, Patrick Shuler Lineberry, Bryan Dougherty Lineberry, and Christopher Scott Lineberry; four great-grand-children; Hannah Howerton Houser, Abby Lineberry Houser, McIver Crawford Saunders, and Richard Maus Johnson, IV; and many, many Lineberry and Howerton relatives.

Helen leaves a legacy of God's pure love in her family, church, community, and the world in which she came in contact.
