James Ralph Boyd was born December 20, 1921, to James Otto and Nannie May (Fountain) Boyd. He married Hazel May Greathouse, on June 11, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa. At the time, he was a farmer residing in Tonica, La Salle County, Illinois, and Hazel was a resident of Granville, Putnam County, Illinois. They had three sons: Richard Ralph Boyd, born in 1940, Larry Joe Boyd, born in ____ , and Ronald William Boyd, born in 1944.

Boyd served as a Private, with the U.S. Army 8th Infantry, 8th Infantry Division, in the ETO during WW II. An excerpt from the Center for Military History, United States Army, 8th Infantry Division, Combat Chronicle, at history.army.mil:

"After training in Ireland the 8th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, 4 July 1944, and entered combat on the 7th. Fighting through the hedgerows, it crossed the Ay River, 26 July, pushed through Rennes, 8 August, and attacked Brest in September. The Crozon Peninsula was cleared, 19 September, and the Division drove across France to Luxembourg, moved to the Hurtgen Forest, 20 November, cleared Hurtgen on the 28th and Brandenburg, 3 December, and pushed on to the Roer."

Pvt. Boyd was Killed In Action, in Germany, on November 30, 1944. His remains were returned home almost four years later, arriving in Granville, on Tuesday, November 2, 1948.

Funeral services were held by the Granville VFW and the American Legion, on Sunday, November 7, 1948, at 2:00 p.m., at the Dysart Funeral Chapel, in Granville. Rev. Roy W. Johnson officiated. Howard L. Dysart, Undertaker, conducted the funeral arrangements. Pvt. Boyd was buried alongside fellow veterans, in the Soldiers Field of the Granville Cemetery, in Granville.

Pvt. Boyd was survived by his wife and three sons; his mother, Mrs. Harold Cofoid, of Spring Valley, Bureau County, Illinois; his father, James O. Boyd, of Tonica, La Salle County, Illinois; two sisters, Mrs. Martha L. Burgess, of Tonica, and Mrs. Thelma L. Woodall, of Santa Monica, California; and two brothers, Wilson C. Boyd, and _____ .
