Detective Elms Dead: Man Engaged in Private Work in Los Angeles Over Quarter Century Passes Out
John P. Elms, one of the most widely-known private detectives in the West, and former husbad of Mrs. U.S. Grant, Jr., of San Diego, died at the Clara Barton Hospital yesterday from a complication of ailments. He was 50 years old.
For twenty-seven years he had been engaged in detective work in Los Angeles, and was the founder of the night watch service. In the years of his greatest activity he was influential politically.
In 1906 he separated from his wife and she divorced him later, and afterward the former Mrs. Elms became the wife of Mr. Grant.
The funeral service will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel of Garrett & Co., No. 1237 South Flower Street. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

His mother was Angelina Robinson, first wife of Charles Haywood Elms. She died the month after his birth, and he and his brother Hamilton were reared by their uncle.
