He grew up as an Army Brat, attending schools all across the US. Attended Galilleo High School in San Francisco, but dropped out and went to sea, on a ship arranged by his father. Eventually he attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet School in San Mateo, California. Upon graduation they were commissioned Ensigns in the U. S. Navy Reserve.

He served on Liberty Ships and other ships built by the Maritime Commission for service in WW II, and he made many trips to Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands.

He later became a Captain for American President Lines.
