William Blanding V 1747 – 1830

Born of an old family in Rehoboth, Massachusetts (later East Providence, RI), William Blanding attended Rhode Island College (Brown) graduating in 1801. He continued his studies, receiving a Doctor of Medicine degree from Brown. He first settled a practice in Attleboro, Massachusetts, but soon moved to Camden, South Carolina, where he practiced medicine and became a foremost scholar in natural history. Blanding was an active member of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and accumulated one of the largest collections of his time, some of which he donated to the Academy. In 1846, he returned to Rehoboth, where he remained until he died. In 1871, his family deposited his cabinet of minerals, shells, fossils, relics, and coins numbering 7,769 in Brown's Museum of Natural History.

Dr. Blanding was born in Rehoboth Feb 7 1773; Graduated at Brown University with the class of 1801; and was for many years engaged in pursuing his professional duties in Camden So Ca; after which he retired to Philadelphia and passed many years in the pursuit of his favourite studies the natural Sciences. His Benevolence was large; his Generosity unbounded and in him true merit ever found a noble Patron and Protection.
