Shawnee resident Arnold E. Long, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 31, 2011, at Rose Manor Nursing home in Shawnee.

He was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Layton Hollow near Exeter in Barry County, Mo., to James Edward and Lucy Elisabeth (Metcalf) Long. He was the fourth of five children.

In Granby, Mo., on July 5, 1937, he married Ruth Carter. They served in pastorates in Missouri and Oklahoma before retiring in Shawnee in 1980.

Arnold is survived by his wife Ruth and their two children, their spouses and children and two great-granddaughters.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Effie Kelly, Grace Harris and Lorraine Erwin; and one brother, Cecil Long.

Arnold has been a member of University Baptist Church since 1980 where he was an ordained deacon and ministered to the senior adults as a Sunday School teacher and department director.

Arnold will always be remembered as a man who never met a stranger and always had a funny story to tell. He served his Lord, his family, and his churches with honor and distinction.

A private burial service was held at Resthaven Memorial Park. His memorial service was at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at the University Baptist Church located at 2515 N. Kickapoo Ave.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were requested sent to University Baptist Church for the Lottie Moon Mission offering or Shawnee Habitat for Humanity.
