Because of her husband being in the U.S. Army assigned to the Headquarters Troop 11th Cavalry Group (Mechanized), their first years of marriage were preoccupied with multiple moves and just "thinking of survival...living everyday to the fullest, because there was no assurance of tomorrow," as remembered by Marie. After Cotton returned from the European theater in October 1945, he was employed variously (auto body work and upholstery, manager for Singer in Ardmore, Oklahoma, and ran an appliance dealership in Healdton, Oklahoma, etc.) all the while Marie utilized her skills in bookkeeping and in management. After a short time of residing in Dallas, Texas, in the late 60s when they cared for Cotton's aging father until his death, they moved to Oklahoma City in the fall of 1970 and remained there until Marie's death.
By the mid-1970s Cotton had developed a very successful industrial sewing machine business, C & M Industrial—"C" for Cotton and "M" for Marie. After they both "retired," Cotton still managed to repair a few industrial sewing machines from all over the state, and Marie maintained her bookkeeping skills for the family business.
Though Aunt Marie and Uncle Cotton had no children of their own, their home was a haven of help and acceptance for many a young person through the years of their marriage. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a number of family and friends on November 17, 1991, at the May Avenue Wesleyan Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where they both were active, responsible members.
On October 28, 1997, Marie succumbed to her decade-long bout with cancer. Cotton continued to reside in Oklahoma City until the early 2001 when he moved to Victoria, Texas, to be near one of his younger brothers.
