Ellen J. Gwathmey Fry was one of the children born to George Clark Gwathmey and his wife Sophia Weston Garrard.

Ellen was united in marriage in Louisville, Kentucky in 1854 to Brig. General Cary H Fry, U.S.A. Cary was a civilian physician prior to enlisting in the Army February 3, 1854. Ellen and Cary relocated from Kentucky to the Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory in the mid 1850's.

Ellen and Cary did not have any children during their almost 20 year marriage. Ellen was widowed at the age of 47 when Cary passed away. Ellen moved back to their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky where she remained until she passed away at the age of 71. Ellen is interred with her parents and siblings, while her husband is interred in Frankfort, Kentucky.
