Born in Bedford, Virginia, he became a teacher at the age of 17, and an ordained Episcopal minister at the age of 28. He became the chaplin for the University of Virginia.
He was elected as the first bishop of the diocese of Alabama in 1844. He served as the Rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church from 1854 to 1858.
