Nora Aga, 91
Nora Lorraine (Anderson) Aga was born the 9th of 10 children to John F. and Mary (McFarlene) Anderson on November 23, 1915. The Anderson family was well known in the Alexandria community and Nora thrived amidst all the family activities. Nora was confirmed into the Christian faith at Svea Lutheran Church (Calvary Lutheran) and graduated from the Alexandria High School with the class of 1933. While in high school, Nora was active in the Drum and Bugle Corps and was an excellent academic and athlete.
Following a brief but memorable career at the cosmetic department of F.W. Woolworth Company, Nora married the love of her life, Ercel Aga, on July 25, 1939. Nora and Erc set up their first home in Fairmont, where their first child was born in 1940. The Agas returned to Alexandria where Nora was to be a homemaker for the remainder of her life. Three more children were born and Nora committed her time to the raising of her four children, the care of her husband and the tending of hearth and home.
Nora was a lifetime member of Calvary Lutheran Church where she served on many committees, taught Release Time education for many years and was a member of the Rachel Circle. She was an avid golfer, bridge player and seamstress, but everyone who knew her knew that cooking was her passion. Nora grew a vegetable garden, canned her produce and created many memorial meals for her family and friends. Erc was known to say after every meal, "Nora, this was the best meal you ever made." A family favorite of roast beef, potatoes and gravy was fondly referred to as a "Norie Dorie."
Nora and her antics became well known to the readers of the Alexandria newspaper through the words of Erc's weekly column. Although there were times she felt he went too far, she good-naturedly put up with his hilarious versions of her daily life. Several times Nora took pen to hand and set the readers straight. Erc had a way of showing Nora to be the smart and organized half of their union.
In retirement, Nora and Erc wintered in Harlingen, Texas, where she enjoyed visits to Mexico, Padre Island and time with friends and family. Nora's grandchildren were the stars in her sky. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, hiking, reading and wicked games of Sprite and Malice with her seven grandkids. They all felt they were her favorite.
Until the week of her death Nora remained a huge fan of Alexandria High School sports. Late this fall she was visited by the captains of the girls' volleyball team who she faithfully followed until the end of this season. The Twins and Vikings were also a source of enjoyment and frustration for her.
Nora lost her love for life the day she lost the love of her life. She spent her final eight years at Knute Nelson Memorial Home in her beloved Alexandria. She enjoyed the staff and hearing of their families and lives. She critiqued the meals, and quite frankly, should have been allowed to supervise the kitchen, and so enjoyed visits from family and friends. Nora died an old lady in her bed on November 30, 2006.
Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Ercel Aga, in 1996, her parents, and eight brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children, Richard and Fran Aga of Alexandria, Marilyn and John Roesler of Phoenix, Arizona, Kathryn and "Bumper" Lee of Alexandria and her "early Christmas gift," Robert Drew of Westby, WI.
Nora's grandchildren include Michael, Robb and wife Stefanie, Peter and wife Jill Roesler; Scott and wife Lisa, Ryan and wife Erika Aga; Cara Drew and Andrew Lee. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Jack, Drew and Will Aga, Renee Roesler and Trinity Roesler and her sister, Florence Yarger, of Minneapolis; many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, at Calvary Lutheran Church. The Rev. Keith Forrester will officiate. Becky Worley, Bruce Aga, Audrey Aga and Rob Drew will provide music. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Honorary pallbearers include Scott Aga, Ryan Aga, Michael Roesler, Robb Roesler, Peter Roesler, Cara Drew and Andrew Lee. Interment in Kinkead Cemetery is private.
